As indicated in the Preface, the authorship of the book is uncertain.

From clues in the text, it has been suggested by twentieth century scholars familiar with archeological discoveries in Egypt that most of the book was written some time after 1360 BCE by Amenhotep IV, Pharaoh of Egypt, or by some of his successors in the great Egyptian school of mysticism.
